New ransomware “Petya” has hit Ireland

Following from the recent “WannaCry” cyber attack, IT systems at the Irish operations of three international companies were affected by a major new global cyber attack yesterday.

The ransomware is identified as the ” Petya Ransomware” and once infected, will begin encrypting the local master boot record of infected machines rendering them unable to boot up.  The ransomware will then spread to encrypting and infecting other machines and servers on the network.

The virus infection first spreads through Phishing Emails containing infected attachments & links to malicious websites. Once inside the organization, the virus replicates itself without the need for email or any interaction from employees.
